Europe Road Trip Guide 2020
TIPS:
There’s no tax!
You don’t need to tip at most restaurants.
In larger cities, pay for the “hop on, hop off” bus for transportation. It will bring you to everything you’d want to see and is a much cheaper option.
You need to pay to use the washroom in most places.
Book hotels the night or couple nights in advance if you’re moving around in case of an emergency. Not weeks before.
If you’re booking lots of hotels, hotel.com gives you a free night after 10 stays and can get you better deals and free breakfast!
You MUST have winter tires in certain countries if you’re travelling in winter months.
Plan time for rest if you’re constantly moving! You will get much more tired then you think!
Amsterdam:
Coffee shops are not cafes ;)
Check out Giethoorn. It’s the Venice of the Netherlands
If you want to see windmills go to Zaanse Schans
Germany:
Go to Burg Eltz castle. It’s about a 20 min hike to get there and is absolutely breath taking
^ About an hour from here is the Geierlai Suspension Bridge. that is worth checking out.
Berlin was overrated in our opinion
Munich is a beautiful
If you’re here around Christmas time, check out the Christmas markets here!
Paris:
Everything is SMALL in Paris, your hotel rooms will be tiny!
If you want to see the Louvre, book in advance
“hop on hop off” bus was perfect for travelling around here
Barcelona:
A cheap spot to stay is “Hostal Fina.” It’s located right downtown.
Keep your belongings in sight. Spain is known for it’s pick pocketing! (we got stolen from on the beach)
Drink lots of sangrias!
Italy:
In ROME, Go to Trevi Fountain & walk those back streets!
In ROME, the Colosseum tour is for sure worth it!
In VENICE, go to Burano, not Murano
Saturnia, Tuscany has the most amazing natural hot spring.
AMALFI
First of all, GO HERE.
We stayed in Minori which was beautiful and less touristy. 15 min from Amalfi, 45 min from Positano
Positano was my favourite
The drive to Amalfi is crazy beautiful and crazy scary. Very windy roads that are up very high and super skinny. Make sure you’re a confident driver ;) or just take the bus.
Switzerland:
Some locations can only be accessed by train
Switzerland has an actual border, unlike the other countries
Costs: (1 month of travel)
Our budget goal was to spend 100 euros per day/ 700 euros per week
We could’ve cut costs by staying in cheaper hostels and eating out less
Our hotels costs from $78 - $110 CAD per night
We spent around $200 on tolls
Don’t forget about parking costs, we lost track of ours
We spent $1,740 CAD for food & drinks for 2 people
In total we spent around $4,400 for 2 people ($2,200 PP)
^cost do include some extra tours we did and does not include initial flight.
