Greece
Athens & Santorini in the winter
1: Athens
Start by seeing the must-see historic sites. A lot of these sites are within walking distance from each other, so I recommend getting a 30 euro pass that lasts 5 days to see them all rather than paying per site. Sites range individually from 5 to 10 euros. We started at the Acropolis which also gives a beautiful view overlooking the city of Athens. We also viewed the Parthenon and Temple of Hephaestus.
2. Flying to Santorini
Take a tiny propeller plane to one of the many small islands of Greece, Santorini. This flight was only about 45 minutes and $28 Canadian. I also am dreaming of seeing Mykonos and Zakynthos which are also little greek islands if you wanted to explore some more.
3. Santorini
Santorini’s views are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The island is so small that you can see one tip to the other, taking about 1 hour to drive across. Take your time to walk along the pathways on the side of the cliff and enjoy this magical place. Santorini is definitely not over rated.
4: Fira, Santorini
We stayed at “On the Cliff Suites” in Fira (or known as Thira) which is the capital city of Santorini. We found this to be less expensive than the famous city of Oia but just as beautiful. Fira is also located in the middle of the Island therefore making it easy to travel around the island.
5: Red Beach
This Volcanic beach is like no other. Only a 2 minute walk around a corner and then you come across this red coloured sand. Red Beach is a beautiful 20 min drive from Fira.
6: Oia, Santorini
Oia is the famous city you see in all the photos of the white and blue churches and incredible views. Oia is a 20 minute drive from Fira. During the summer months it is also an option to hike from one to the other. Oia was my favourite location, it’s so picturesque. Oia is most popular for it’s sunsets. Make sure to get here on time for a spot because it tends to get busy.
7: Black Beach
Black beach also known as Mesa Pigadia beach is the darkest sand on the Island and also has beautiful blue water. It’s a 23 minute drive from Fira.
7: Skaros Rock
This famous rock is located in the village of Imerovigli. It has a pathway around the rock with a picturesque blue Orthodox church on the other side. Unfortunately due to high winds we were not able to do this hike but it is very recommended and a great photo opportunity on the other side.
8: Pyrgos
Pygros is a hidden gem we just happened upon. It’s a small village on a mountain top surrounded by vineyards. Check out this village to get away from tourists and to catch a glimpse of how the locals live.
TIP: Travelling in the winter to Santorini has its pros and cons. Over all we were happy to travel during the winter months even though we had a rainy week. I’ve seen how busy the summer gets and I would way rather have what we had.
PROS: Very minimal tourists, places to yourself, cheaper prices.
CONS: Limited restaurant and shop choices. Colder and windier temperatures.
